Wheelin & Dealin

Oh, the fun to be had at yard sales!

Sam and I woke up at 5:30 a.m. this morning to Brylee wanting a bottle (she's not slept through the night SINCE we left our place in Louisville).  We couldn't sleep (ok, actually Sam COULD sleep), and I got on the computer and started looking for bookshelves on Craigslist (we need one for Brylee's playroom).  Well...that search led to a list of garage sales in the west knox area.  Next thing I know, I had begged Sam (and was actually able to convince him) into going garage "sale-ing" with me!  I was so excited, b/c in the 3 1/2 years we've been together, we had NEVER gone to a garage sale together.  Plus, it got us out of the house and out from under our stack of boxes! =)

Being the smart and practical garage sale buyers that we are, we decided to go to two neighborhood garage sales so we could go to a few houses in one subdivision.  But first, there was one bookshelf on Craigslist listed for $5 (it had a picture), and I thought that with a little white paint (and maybe a few pink accents), this birch bookshelf would look great for Brylee's playroom.  So I call the lady and she says we can have it if we show up at her place before 10 a.m.

We get to this lady's house....and the bookshelf looks NOTHING like it did in the photo (birch?  try cardboard!)!  I'm actually not sure if you can call it a "bookshelf" b/c bookshelves typically have shelves and this had NONE!  But since we had said on the phone we wanted it, we paid her $5 with the promise that Sam was going to make me some shelves for my "bookshelf" out of our extra shelves the contractors had left over from building our kitchen cabinets.  Ha, this bookshelf was becoming another BIG PROJECT on our ever growing list!

So we continue on to our two subdivisions of neighborhood garage sales... and after visiting four houses, we go to a house that has a large, orange bookshelf for $25.  Sam, Brylee, and I look at it...and while this bookshelf is HUGE, it does actually have shelves.  As we're discussing the possibility of painting it white, the garage sale lady hears me.  She's like "I have a white bookshelf for sale right over there!"  We look, and see the CUTEST, white, sturdy, well-made bookshelf!  This bookshelf was sooo much cuter than even ones I was looking at brand new from furniture stores.  It was PERFECT!

Now we have a dilemma.  We don't have room for the perfect, white bookshelf in our SUV with the $5 bookshelf and Brylee's stroller in the back.  As Sam and I are debating how we're going to fit this white bookshelf in our vehicle, the garage sale lady thinks we're debating whether or not to buy it, and comes over and drops the price $10!  So now, the white bookshelf is only $25 (little did she know we were a FOR SURE sale!).

Ha, so I go pull up the vehicle to put this white bookshelf in the back, and Sam asks the garage sale lady if they will take our $5 bookshelf.  Needless to say, the bookshelf with no shelves ended up at their garage sale, and if I had to guess ... it is probably now at the trash dump with their leftover items they couldn't sell!

Anyways, Sam, Brylee, and I actually had a LOT OF FUN today going to garage sales.  At the beginning of the day Sam thought this was all going to be a waste of time... but we had a blast.  I have a feeling we will end up going again sometime this summer.
Our list of garage sale finds today:
    - Bookshelf $30 (it was $25, but since we spent $5 on the first bookshelf... technically it was $30)
    - little M&M figuarine 25 cents (Sam thinks this was the steal of the century... if I had to guess, it will probably make its way into one of our garage sales for 25 cents sometime in the next couple of years =)haha)
     - Balderdash (a game) $2.00
     - Titanic the boardgame $3.00
     - Bunny Potato Head $2.00 (ha, a lady was really pushing us to buy something for Brylee... so out of all her "baby" toys we picked something that has to sit on her closet shelf until she turns three and can't swallow the parts =) )
      - Truth or Crap playing cards $2.00
      - a black, leather Tennessee notebook 25 cents
      - Little Tykes piano $1.00

You all should have come to our neighborhood. We had a neighborhood yard sale as well! We didn't have enough stuff to put in it so we just ended up going to the pool!
